I'm back from my first overnight hike in 8 years....and the 3.1 mile hike up Mount Tremper in the Catskills was no piece of cake!
This was the first time I have hiked up and down a mountain with a full pack and it was quite challenging for me. I have day hiked up and down
Loon Mountain in New Hampshire, day hiked
Mt. Wachusetts in Princeton, MA and have run up
Pack Monadnock in New Hampshire but this was the first time backpacking with a full pack weighing about 50lbs. (not to mention me weighing in at 250lbs.+:>)
The last overnite backpacking trip was a two nighter over the
Long Trail in Vermont using much of the same gear I used on the Mt Tremper hike but no mountain climbs were involved even tho it was pretty hilly.
I am pretty happy ovah this hike.....probably something more than Buddy the Beagle and I should have tackled first time out this year but we did it and I and am very pleased with my own effort and pretty damn proud of that ole hound:>)
The Hike up and down from the Phoenicia, NY side is not filled with a lot of panoramic views of the Catskills and the trail bed is littered with small and large chips of bluestone from the ole quarry half way up making it a challenging workout but it is a great woodsy hike that has a few very small mountain creeks to cross over, tons of birdsong & small crittah chirping and an ample amount of deer sightings for a hikah to enjoy.
I am usually able to see the deer before Buddy the Beagle does and it is not unusual for him to smell an ole scent and go nuts...on our hike down off the mountain Buddy spotted a small herd to our right before me and he went nuts after the herd....it was fun watching him chase this herd as it scattered to get away from him...and he chased it a fair amount off trail and up an embankment - for a moment I was worried I may have to go off trail and look for him but once he realized none of the deer understood he was only looking to be amigos he found his way back on to the trail and me:>)
Buddy the Beagle and I pitched our tent on the top of Mt Tremper - we got to the summit at about 6:00 P.M. on Monday. The first job was to climb to the top of the fire tower to check out the panoramic views it offered of the Catskills and Buddy followed:>) The wooden stairs have seen better times so we did not stay up there long but I am glad we got this in first because it was very foggy on Tuesday morning and we would not have the panoramic views available to us on Monday evening!
After setting up the tent and making some dinner we retired for the night in the tent - I read a wee bit and Buddy the Beagle sacked right out....about 10:00 P.M. is started raining and it rained all night long and into the morning. One thing to note about rain when camping....it may contribute to a romantic evening inside by a fire with a significant other but when camping out in a tent with a dog on top of a mountain it does nothing but keep you up for a good chunk of the night and is also no fun when the night time
"it's time walk" takes place with the pooch:>)
The rain came down well into the early morning so it was a great reason to sleep in...and we did! Buddy the Beagle and I were still knackered from the day before's hike and we still had to get off the mountain so sleeping in did us no harm:>) We finally got up...made some breakfast - tea and warm granola w/ banana for me and Purina Dog Chow for Buddy the Beagle....broke camp and enjoyed the last few moments of the foggy mountain top and then hiked down and back to civilization:>) Boy was civilization glad we made it back - aren't you:>)
We cleaned up at the trail head...I enjoyed a cold Budweiser..traded some stories with hikahs going up and then headed to Woodstock, NY for a chicken salad sandwich (I have found the best place for chicken salad in the entire World) and then we did some meandering around Woodstock, NY before heading home but not before stopping off in Catskill, NY for one more slice of pizza for Buddy the Beagle and me....a celebration for our accomplishment was in order and what bettah way to celebrate than over slices of great pizza:>) It was our first ovah night mountain backpack but not our last.......any Buddy the Beagle friendly suggestions?
